Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Aegyptopithecus.

Etymology: < scientific Latin Aegyptopithecus, genus name (E. L. Simons 1965, in Nature 9 Jan. 135/2; compare quot. 1965) < classical Latin Aegyptus , the name of Egypt (see Egyptian adj.) + -o- -o- connective + -pithecus (see Pliopithecus n.).

Palaeontology.

An extinct ape-like primate, Aegyptopithecus zeuxis (now often placed in the genus Propliopithecus: see Propliopithecus n.), known from early Oligocene fossil remains found in the Fayum Depression of Egypt, and dated to about 33 million years ago. Also: the genus Aegyptopithecus itself.Cf. dawn man n.
