Etymology: < post-classical Latin -angularis (in e.g. quadrangularis quadrangular adj.) < classical Latin -angulus (in e.g. octangulus octangle adj.) + -āris -ar suffix¹. Compare angular adj.Attested earliest in the Middle English period in the Latin loan quadrangular adj., and subsequently in Latin loans and adaptations, e.g. triangular adj., rectangular adj. Formations within English are found from the 17th cent., e.g. equiangular adj. Chiefly combining with first elements ultimately of Latin origin.

1. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘having an angle or angles of a type specified by the first element’, as acutangular adj., obtusangular adj., etc. Cf. angled adj. 1a.

2. Forming adjectives with the sense ‘having as many interior angles as is specified by the first element’, as decangular adj. at deca- comb. form 1, hexangular adj., etc.
