cleadcleedv.

Forms: Middle English cleþ(e, kleþe, clede, ( clete), Middle English–1500s cleth(e, 1500s cleith(e, ( cleitht), cleath, 1500s–1800s cleid, 1700s– cleed, clead. Past tense and participle, Middle English– cled, ( cledde, cledd, clethd): cf. clad adj.
Origin: A borrowing from early Scandinavian.
Etymology: Middle English (north.) cleþe , past tense cledde , past participle cled , < Old Norse klæða , past tense klædda , past participle klædd-r (Swedish kläda , Danish klæde ) to clothe; < klæði , noun: see cloth n. (Not the exact correspondent to Old English cláðian < type *klaiþojan.) The past tense, klædda was < *klæðda; in later times the present stem has, by levelling, and assimilation to the type of feed, breed, etc., become cleed, clead. The normal Scots spelling is cleid, but in the verbal noun has passed into general use in the form cleading.
northern dialect.
