1. Any of the governing bodies under the Presbyterian system of ecclesiastical polity, having both administrative and judicial functions.The four levels of church court are, in ascending order of accountability: the kirk session (kirk session n.), the presbytery (presbytery n. 2a), the synod (synod n. 1b), and the general assembly (general assembly n. (a) at general adj. and n. Compounds 2).
