In early use: †a handbell used in church (obsolete). Later: a (usually large) bell, frequently one of a set, hung in the tower of a church and rung to call people to worship, at a wedding, funeral, festival, etc., or to tell the time.The ringing of changes (change n. 9a) or peals (peal n.1 1d) on a set of church bells is carried out as a pastime by societies of bell ringers, esp. in the United Kingdom.
