Etymology: < age n. + mate n.2 Compare earlier playmate n.Apparently independently re-formed in the 19th cent., perhaps after German Altersgenosse (1784 or earlier).
Now chiefly Cultural Anthropology and Sociology.
A person of the same age, or belonging to the same age group; a contemporary, a peer.
