释义

aforewardadv.prep.

Brit. /əˈfɔːwəd/, U.S. /əˈfɔrwərd/
Forms: early Middle English aforeworda, Middle English afforeward, Middle English aforeward, Middle English aforewarde, Middle English aforward, Middle English avoreward; U.S. regional 1800s– aforeward.
Origin: A variant or alteration of another lexical item. Probably also partly formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: on forward at forward n. 1; afore adv., -ward suffix.
Etymology: Originally < on forward at forward n. 1, with reduction of the first element (compare a- prefix3). Compare earlier afore adv., afore prep. In later use probably re-formed < afore adv. + -ward suffix.
Now rare (U.S. regional in later use).
