Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; originally modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: afore- prefix, English thought , think v.2
Etymology: < afore- prefix + thought, past participle of think v.2 Originally (in malice aforethought) after Anglo-Norman purpensée (in malice purpensée (see purpensed adj.); compare malice prepense n. at prepense adj. 1a and malice prepensed n. at prepensed adj. 1). Compare earlier aforethought n. Compare also earlier forethink v. and forethought adj. (especially in malice forethought at forethought adj. 1).
Chiefly used postpositively. Originally and esp. Law in malice aforethought (see also malice n. 2). That was thought before; entertained in the mind beforehand; premeditated.
