Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element. Etymons: Latin -āneus , -ous suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin -āneus (an, unexplained, extended form of -eus : see -eous suffix) + -ous suffix.Attested earliest in the 15th and 16th centuries in borrowings from Latin, e.g. momentaneous adj., membraneous adj., cutaneous adj. Formations within English are very rare, compare cameranious adj., obitaneously adv.
Forming adjectives with the sense ‘relating to or of the nature of (that which is specified by the first element)’, as instantaneous adj., miscellaneous adj., simultaneous adj., spontaneous adj., etc.
