单词 chigoe
释义

chigoen.

Brit. /ˈtʃɪɡəʊ/, U.S. /ˈtʃiˌɡoʊ/
Forms: Also –1700s chego, 1700s chiego, ciego, 1700s–1800s chegoe, chigre, 1800s chigua, chigo, 1800s–1900s chigger. Also jigger n.1
Etymology: A West Indian name: the French form is chique, which Littré thinks identical with Spanish chico small; of this chigo might be a Creole form: evidence is wanting. Chigger, jigger, are corruptions by English-speaking people.
A small species of flea ( Pulex or Sarcopsylla penetrans), found in the West Indies and South America. The female burrows beneath the skin of the human feet (and sometimes of the hands) and becomes greatly distended with eggs, which are sometimes hatched there, causing itching, and painful sores.
