Etymology: formed as chieftain n. + -ness suffix. Cheventaynes occurs in 15th cent. and chefetaynes in early 16th cent.; but apparently the word after being long obsolete was formed anew by Scott.
A female chief or chieftain; a female head of a clan or tribe.
