Origin: Apparently a borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish chiva.

Etymology: Apparently < Spanish (Mexico and Southern U.S.) chiva heroin (1964 or earlier), apparently a specific sense development of Spanish chiva nanny goat, (in South America also) goat, feminine form corresponding to chivo kid, billy goat (1475; of unknown origin).The motivation for application of this word to heroin is unclear. It may reflect the proverbial association of the goat with madness seen in various expressions in Spanish; compare e.g. estar (loco) como una chiva to be crazy, lit. ‘to be (crazy) like a goat’ (1938 or earlier) and use of chiva loca , lit. ‘crazy goat’, as a derogatory expression for a person behaving in a crazed or irrational manner (c1929 or earlier; compare with similar extension to narcotics horse n. 15). However, compare earlier use of the Spanish plural form chivas in Mexico and Southern U.S. in the sense ‘possessions, stuff, gear, junk’ (1964 or earlier; compare also denoting heroin junk n.¹ 8, gear n. Additions).
