Etymology: < classical Latin aedicula small room, small house, small shrine, chapel, tomb, sepulchre < aedēs , aedis dwelling place, house, temple, sanctuary, shrine, tomb, sepulchre (see edifice n.) + -cula -cula suffix. Compare later aedicule n.In plural form aediculae after the Latin plural form.
Originally in Roman architecture: a niche (for a statue), esp. one framed by two columns supporting a pediment or an entablature; such a structure forming a shrine.
