Compare German Cholester- (formations in which are found from the mid 19th cent.).Attested earliest in the early 19th cent. in cholesterate n. and cholesteric adj., both adaptations from French, and subsequently in a number of adaptations from German in the mid 19th cent. Formations within English are found from the second half of the 19th cent., e.g. cholesteraemia n.
