Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: chich n., pease n.
Etymology: Originally < chich n. (compare forms at that entry) + pease n., after Middle French pois chiche. The β. forms show remodelling of the second element after pea n.2 With the γ. forms compare chickling n.1 and discussion at that entry.
The seed of the leguminous plant Cicer arietinum, which has a distinctive beaked and wrinkled appearance, occurs in various colours (esp. yellow, black, and red), and is an important food source for humans. Also: the plant itself, a relatively low-growing annual with pinnate leaves, toothed leaflets, and short pods containing one or two seeds, which was probably originally cultivated in western Asia in prehistoric times and is now grown worldwide.Earlier English names for the seed or plant were chich and Cicer.Also called chana, gram, garbanzo, Egyptian pea, etc.
