Origin: A borrowing from Swahili. Etymon: Swahili chipsi mayai.

Etymology: < Swahili chipsi mayai, short for chipsi na mayai < chipsi chips ( < English chips , plural of chip n.²) + na and + mayai ( < ma- , plural class prefix + yai egg). The α. forms show remodelling of the first element of the Swahili word after its etymon English chips.

In Tanzanian and Kenyan cookery: a thick omelette having fried potatoes (chips) mixed in with the eggs during cooking, served open rather than folded and often eaten as a street food.Also called French fries omelette or chip(s) omelette.
