(a) Ecclesiastical Law. = advowson n.; the office or function of an advowee (advowee n. 1). (b) = avowry n. 1; (also) a person responsible for providing this protection (or perhaps: the payments made to ensure this).In latter sense with reference to a system of patronage operating in Cheshire and Wales, whereby protection was bought from a local lord (see quot. 1485-6).
