Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish chicha.

Etymology: < Spanish chicha (G. F. de Oviedo y Valdés 1526, or earlier), apparently < a language of the Caribbean, although its identity is uncertain and disputed.The Spanish word has sometimes been taken to be a borrowing from Cuna (later spoken in the region discussed by Oviedo), but this is unlikely for phonological reasons. The rare forms chica and chicka, both in translated texts, probably originated as typographical errors, perhaps copied from editions of the underlying works and used more widely by the translator.
