Origin: Formed within English, by compounding; modelled on German lexical items. Etymons: chole- comb. form, diuretic adj.
Etymology: < chole- comb. form + -retic (in diuretic adj.), after German choleretisch (T. Brugsch & H. Horsters 1923, in Zeitschr. f. die gesamte exper. Med. 38 369, the paper reviewed in quot. 1926) and Cholereticum (1923 on page 368 of the same paper) respectively, both ultimately after Cholerese amount of bile secreted by the liver in a specific time (1923 in the same paper).

1929 Ann. Internal Med. 3 572/1 Brugsch and Horsters originated the term choleretic to designate a drug which increases the flow of bile from the liver as distinguished from the term cholagogue which means expulsion of bile from the gall-bladder.
