Etymology: < Hindi chaukī shed, watch-house, station, lock-up.
Anglo-Indian.
1. A custom or toll station, in India (in quot. 1608 erroneously applied to the toll itself); a station for palankin-bearers, horses, etc., a guardhouse; a police station.
