Etymology: < Dutch advocaat, †advokaat (late 19th cent. or earlier), apparently shortened < advocatenborrel egg-and-brandy liqueur (1806 or earlier), apparently < advocaten- , combining form of advocaat advocate n. + borrel (small) portion of strong drink (1685; < borre , variant of borne well, spring (see burn n.¹) + -el , suffix forming diminutives: see -el suffix¹). Compare (with diminutive suffix) Dutch advocaatje (small) glass of advocaat (1789) and post-classical Latin vinum advocatum a drink made of brandy, sugar and nutmeg (but apparently not eggs) (1665 in a Dutch source).It has been suggested that the first element is not the word for ‘advocate’, but Dutch advocaat avocado (1770 in advocaaten-boom , denoting the tree and advocaaten-peer , denoting the pear-shaped fruit; apparently formed in Central or South America after Spanish avocado advocate, avocado: see avocado n.), originally with reference to an avocado-based drink of the former Dutch colonies. Such a drink (made of avocado flesh, sugar and Madeira wine) is described, but not named, in a Dutch text about Indonesia of 1886.
