Origin: A borrowing from Chichewa. Etymon: Chichewa Cheŵa.
Etymology: < Chichewa Cheŵa, self-designation. With use with reference to the language (see sense A. 2) compare earlier Chichewa n. and Chichewa adj.In the form Cheŵa (used in Malawian English), ŵ reflects the voiced bilabial fricative of the Chichewa etymon.
