Origin: A borrowing from Hebrew. Etymon: Hebrew ăp̄īqōmān.
Etymology: < post-biblical Hebrew ăp̄īqōmān (13th cent. in this sense; already in the Mishnah in uncertain sense: see below), probably < Byzantine Greek ἐπικώμιον revel (attested in a glossary; already in ancient Greek as ἐπικώμια , plural, in sense ‘praises’), use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek ἐπικώμιος of or for a festal procession < ἐπι- epi- prefix + κώμος revel, merrymaking (see comedy n.1) + -ιος, suffix forming adjectives. Compare German Afikoman (1858 or earlier; 1856 or earlier as †Afikomen).Post-biblical Hebrew ăp̄īqōmān occurs in the Mishnah (Pesaḥim 10:8) in an injunction that ‘the Passover meal may not be concluded with afikoman’. This may either mean that one should not indulge in revelry after the Passover meal, or that one should not eat dessert after it.
Judaism.
A piece broken from the second of the three matsot (matzo n.) set before the leader of a Seder, and put aside to be eaten at the end of the meal. The afikoman is traditionally hidden by the leader of the Seder, to be searched for by the children present; the leader then ‘ransoms’ the afikoman so that the Seder may continue.
