单词 chipmunk
释义

chipmunkn.adj.

Brit. /ˈtʃɪpmʌŋk/, U.S. /ˈtʃɪpˌməŋk/
Forms:

α. 1800s chipminck, 1800s– chipmonk, 1800s chipmuck, 1800s chipmuk, 1800s– chipmunk.

β. 1800s–1900s chitmonk, 1800s chitmunk.

γ. 1900s– chickmunk (rare).

Origin: A borrowing from Ojibwa. Etymon: Ojibwa ajidamoo.
Etymology: < the diminutive of a regional (southeastern) variety of Ojibwa ajidamoo American red squirrel (compare the former regional (Nipissing) form acitamo (recorded in the 19th cent.); < acit- upside down + amo to eat), with loss of the reduced short vowels in the first and third syllables, as later reflected by Ojibwa (Ottawa) jidmoonh (which also shows the diminutive suffix). Compare earlier chipping squirrel n. and also chip squirrel n. Compare also earlier ground-squirrel n.The β. forms apparently reflect the original borrowing, while the (now usual) α. forms (with p ) show subsequent assimilation of the stop (originally t ) to the following m in the internal consonant cluster, probably reinforced by association with the imitative element chip- (in chipping squirrel n. and chip squirrel n., both denoting the chipmunk). Compare earlier chickaree n. (denoting the American red squirrel) which shows variation between forms with p and k . It is likely that all these similar-sounding words influenced each other; this may also have contributed to the sense transfer by which English chipmunk came to denote only the ground squirrel. Other variant forms. In the form chipminck perhaps with remodelling of the second element after mink n.1 The form chickmunk at γ. forms apparently shows assimilation of the final consonant in the first syllable to that of the second syllable.
