Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Christificare.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin Christificare to make like Christ (13th cent. in a British source) < classical Latin Christus Christ n. + -ficāre -fy suffix. Compare slightly earlier Christified adj.Compare post-classical Latin christificus made for Christ (6th cent.). Compare also the following earlier isolated example of Christifying, apparently in the sense ‘the action of creating Christ’ (with reference to the consecration of the bread and wine at the celebration of the Eucharist, which according to Catholic teaching involves transubstantiation):1548 Caueat for Christians agaynst Arch-Papist sig. B.iii I praye you why woulde you not call the woordes of consecration, ye wordes of christifieng? or the wordes of creatyng of Christ?
transitive. To unify (a person, the soul, etc.) with Christ; to make like Christ; (also) to Christianize.
