单词 cheslip
释义

cheslipn.

Forms:

α. 1500s chesloppe, 1500s chestloppes (plural), 1500s–1700s cheslop.

β. 1500s cheeselippe, 1500s cheeselypp, 1500s–1700s cheeselip, 1500s–1700s cheselip, 1600s cheslib, 1600s chislep, 1600s–1700s cheeslip, 1600s–1800s cheslip.

Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a variant or alteration of another lexical item. Etymon: cheslock n.
Etymology: Origin uncertain. Perhaps a variant or alteration of cheslock n. (first recorded slightly later, although compare earlier lockchest n.1, lockchester n.), perhaps by association with cheeselip n. (compare variants at that entry). Compare also earlier lugdor n. and later chesil-bob n., cheese-bug n. at cheese n.1 Compounds 2.It has been conjectured that this is the same word as cheeselip n., the insect having been used as a coagulant for milk; however, historical evidence to support this appears to be lacking.
Obsolete.
A woodlouse; esp. a pill woodlouse. Also: a pill millipede.
