Etymology: Old English cisil , ceosel , cysel , corresponding to Old High German chisil (Middle High German kisel , German kiesel , Middle Dutch kēzel ) < Old Germanic type *kesulo- , *kisilo- , derivative of *kiso- , whence Middle High German kis , German kies gravel. As the word is now chiefly dialectal, or retained in place-names, the spelling is unfixed; Chesil and Chisel both occur in place-names. See also chisel n.2 bran.
A collective term for small pebbles, such as those of the sea-beach; gravel, shingle. (In early quots. also = a siliceous stone or pebble, with plural.)
