单词 chesboll
释义

chesbolln.

Forms: Middle English chesbowlle, chesebolle, chessebolle, Middle English–1500s chesboll(e, 1500s chesboull, cheseboule, Scottish chasbolle, 1500s–1600s chesboule, cheesebowl(e, Scottish chesbow, 1600s chessboll, cheesbowl, cheeseboul, Scottish chasbow.
Etymology: Cited in Promp. Parv. and by a number of authors as cheese-bowl , supposed to have some reference to the form of the seed-vessel. Phonetically there is no objection to this, as cheese , Middle English chese , in compounds has become ches- as in chesford n., cheslip or cheeselip n., and bolle is the Middle English form of bowl n.1; but the reason for the name is not obvious. The word is to some extent mixed with chibolle , chibol n., chesbolle being given in various 15th cent. Vocabularies as ‘onion’, and chebole in one as ‘poppy’. (The conjecture that chesboll = ‘ball of pebbly seeds’, as if the first part were chesil, Old English ceosel, has no basis in fact.)
