单词 clee
释义

cleen.

Forms: Old English cléa, cléo, Middle English cleu, Middle English klee, Middle English cle, Middle English–1500s (1800s dialect) clee, Middle English–1600s (1800s dialect) clea, Middle English–1600s (1800s dialect) cley, 1600s cleye, cleie, 1700s–1800s dialect clay. plural Old English cléo, Middle English cleon, cleen, cleos, Middle English– clees, Middle English cles, Middle English, 1600s cleas, 1500s cleyse, cleaze, cleaes, 1500s–1600s clese, cleese, 1500s– cleyes, cleys.
Etymology: Another form of claw n., representing the original Old English form of the nominative, cléa (cléo ); while claw represents the oblique cases (clawe , etc.), and the later nominative clawu reconstructed on these. See claw n.Cléa occurs in Vespasian Psalter, and, with dative plural cléam, also in (? West Saxon) Alexander's Epistle to Aristotle 375, 378; a dative plural clám in Phœnix 277 may possibly be for cléam. Cléo occurs only in poetry: Thorpe's Psalter (not West Saxon). Cléa represented prehistoric clau, claw- or clǽw-, from original *klawâ- or *klæ̂wâ (compare wéa, péa: Sievers Ags. Gram. §112). Of cléo the history is not quite clear: it might be a northern form corresponding to cléa ( < clǽw-), as déd to dǽd (see Sievers Ags. Gram. §112). It is the normal source of Middle English cleu, cle, clee; Middle English clea may represent Old English cléa; the later spelling cley, clay is unexplained.
Obsolete exc. dialect.
