Etymology: < French -andre < ancient Greek -ανδρος (see -androus comb. form), after scientific Latin class names ending in -andria.Most formations are borrowed from French, as monander n., diander n., decander n., polyander n., all attested from the first half of the 19th cent. octander n. and pentander n. appear to be modelled directly on Latin class names. The late 19th-cent. micrander n. appears to be an independent English formation.
