Etymology: < advertise v. + -er suffix1. Compare Middle French, French avertisseur person who informs, notifies, or warns (1281 in Old French as avertisseor; rare after the early 17th cent. except in the specific senses ‘official at the royal court who informs the courtiers when the King will have dinner’ (1680; obsolete after 1771), and ‘theatre employee who tells the actors when they have to appear on the stage’ (1866)).
