chorionic gonadotropin n. (also chorionic gonadotrophin) Physiology a glycoprotein hormone related in structure and function to the pituitary gonadotropins (luteinizing hormone and follicle stimulating hormone), which is produced by the placenta, chiefly in humans, other primates, and equids, and promotes continued hormone secretion by the corpus luteum, enabling the early stages of pregnancy to be maintained; spec. the human form of this hormone; (also) a pharmaceutical preparation of this hormone.
