With plural (or occasionally singular) agreement: a large phylum of animals comprising the vertebrates together with the lancelets and (usually) the sea squirts, characterized by having a more or less well-developed notochord at some stage in their lives. Also with plural agreement (also in form chordata): animals of this group (collectively or individually); chordates.The subphyla of the Chordata are now sometimes elevated to phyla, with the vertebrates being placed separately in the phylum Craniata.
