单词 chindogu
释义

chindogun.

Brit. /tʃɪnˈdəʊɡuː/, U.S. /(t)ʃɪnˈdoʊɡu/
Inflections: Plural unchanged, chindogus.
Forms: 1900s– chindogu, 1900s– chindougu (rare). Also with capital initial.
Origin: A borrowing from Japanese. Etymon: Japanese chindōgu.
Etymology: < Japanese chindōgu (1992 or earlier) < chin novel, curious + dōgu tool, utensil (both elements apparently < Middle Chinese). The idea apparently originated in the mid-1980s with Kenji Kawakami (compare quot. 1992), but the first use of the Japanese word has not been traced. The form chindougu reflects Japanese kana orthography, in which the syllable is represented by the symbols for do + u.
An invention that, while innovative and perhaps ingenious, is of little or no use in the real world, typically created for fun rather than for practical purposes. Also as a mass noun: the art or practice of developing such inventions.Chiefly in Japanese contexts.

1992 Pantagraph (Bloomington, Illinois) 31 Oct. c7/2 ‘Some of these chindogu are destined to become truly useful items in the future,’ he [sc. Kenji Kawakami] points out. ‘It's hard to imagine it, but the creator of the first umbrella was laughed off the street.’
2004 Independent 18 May (Review section) 5/1 Humour is part of the art of Chindogu, which translates roughly as weird or unusual tool, but which some have dubbed ‘the Japanese art of useless inventions’.
2019 @granthenryart 26 Mar. in twitter.com (accessed 16 Aug. 2020) This reminds me of a chindogu except a small part of me suspects that the designer was serious when they thought this up.
