Etymology: A corruption of the Indian name: see quot. 1624.
The Dwarf Chestnut ( Castanea pumila), a native of Virginia and the adjacent states, a shrubby tree, from 6 to 20 ft. high, with a small, very sweet nut. Also, the nut of this tree. water chincapin n. ( Nelumbium luteum). western chincapin n. ( Castanopsis chrysophylla).
