单词 advertence
释义

advertencen.

Brit. /ədˈvəːt(ə)ns/, U.S. /ædˈvərtns/, /ədˈvərtns/
Forms: late Middle English aduertense, late Middle English advertans, late Middle English 1600s– advertence, late Middle English–1500s aduertence, 1500s aduertaunce, 1500s aduertens; also Scottish pre-1700 aduertence, pre-1700 aduertens.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from French. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French advertance, advertence; Latin advertentia.
Etymology: < Middle French advertance, also (with suffix substitution: compare -ence suffix) advertence (second half of the 14th cent.; French (now rare) advertance ), earlier avertance (1354; also avertence ; French (now regional: Walloon) avertance ) attention, notice, and its etymon post-classical Latin advertentia attention, notice (from 13th cent. in British sources; from 14th cent. in continental sources) < classical Latin advertent- , advertēns , present participle of advertere advert v. + -ia -ia suffix1; compare -ence suffix. Sense 1, which is unparalleled in the Romance languages and Latin, probably shows a semantic development from sense 2 (in spite of the apparent chronology). Compare Old Occitan advertansa (1461), Spanish advertencia (a1428), Italian avvertenza (a1385), all in sense ‘attention, notice’. Compare later advertency n.
