Etymology: French, perhaps < the name of the manor of Mont-Chenin , Touraine, where it was first imported from Anjou. The place-name may ultimately derive < Old French chenin ‘dog-like’; compare canine adj.In Gargantua & Pantagruel (1534) I. xxv., Rabelais mentions raisins chenins ; there is some confusion as to whether this refers to the red or the white grape (see quots. 1611 at sense 1, 1928 at sense 2).
1. rare. Usually in full as Chenin Noir. A variety of black grape native to the Loire region, more commonly known as Pineau d'Aunis (see quot. 1994).

2. Usually in full as Chenin Blanc. A variety of white grape, native to the Loire valley but now also widely cultivated elsewhere (esp. in the Americas and in South Africa), and used to make wine with a distinctive flowery taste; also, the vine producing this grape, or the wine made from it.
