Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: chemical adj., -type suffix.
Etymology: < chemi- (in chemical adj.) + -type suffix, after German Chemitypie, denoting both the print and the process (1846 in the title of a book by C. Piil, inventor of the process). Compare chemio- , variant of chemo- comb. form and slightly later chemigraphy n. Compare also electrotype n.
Printing. Now historical.
An illustration, map, or other design printed from a plate prepared by a chemical process, esp. a zinc-etching process (see note). Also: the process itself. Cf. chemigraphy n.The method devised by C. Piil of Copenhagen consisted in filling the engraved or etched lines on a wax-coated zinc plate with another metal, and then eating away the zinc surface with acid so as to leave the other metal standing in relief.
