单词 chemin de fer
释义

chemin de fern.

Brit. /ʃəˌman də ˈfɛː/, U.S. /ʃəˌmɑn də ˈfɛ(ə)r/
Forms: 1800s chémin de fer (irregular), 1800s– chemin-de-fer, 1800s– chemin de fer. Also with capital initials.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French chemin de fer.
Etymology: < French chemin de fer railway (1784), a variation of baccarat (1857 or earlier) < chemin way, road (see chimin n.) + de de prep. + fer iron ( < classical Latin ferrum : see ferro- comb. form), probably after English railway n.The use denoting a variation of baccarat (sense 2) is perhaps on account of the fact that the role of banker moves progressively between players (although this is also true of baccarat).
