Etymology: < post-classical Latin Christotocos (5th cent.) and its etymon Byzantine Greek Χριστοτόκος mother (literally ‘bearer’) of Christ ( < Hellenistic Greek Χριστο- (see Christo- comb. form) + ancient Greek -τόκος bearing: see toco- comb. form), originally via Spanish Christotocos (1613 in the passage translated in quot. 1625; now Cristotocos ). Compare Theotokos n.
Christian Church (chiefly historical).
As a title of the Virgin Mary: Mother of Christ.Used by Nestorius, patriarch of Constantinople (appointed in 428), in preference to Theotokos (Mother of God), in accordance with his doctrine that Christ's human and divine persons were distinct; cf. Nestorianism n.
