A shallow pan, esp. one used to obtain salt by the evaporation of brine; a salt pan. Obsolete.

The action of boiling brine in salt-making. (See also quot. 1674.) Also attributive, as walling-house, walling shed; walling-lead n. a salt-pan.

Salt-making. ‘A certain measure of salt after boiling’ (Leigh Chesh. Gloss., 1877); in quots. a vessel of some kind holding this quantity.

A brass or copper pan or plate used for the evaporation of sea water to obtain salt. Now historical.

A name applied in the Cheshire and Staffordshire salt-works to the ladle used to remove the scum from the brine-pan.

Technology Salt-making. A tank or reservoir used in condensing salt from brine.

In various technical uses. A structure of reeds, broom, etc. on which brine is concentrated by natural evaporation. Obsolete.
