Etymology: Another form of cauldron n.; < Old French chauderon, modern French chaudron (= Spanish calderon, Italian calderone), augmentative of chaudère, chaudière (= Spanish caldera) kettle < Latin caldāria, plural of caldārium hot-bath, < caldus, calidus hot. The etymological form is chaudron; as in cauldron, an l has been inserted in recognition of the remoter derivation, and u subsequently dropped.
