Origin: Formed within English, by compounding. Etymons: Christian adj., brother n.
Etymology: < Christian adj. + the plural of brother n.
Either of two Roman Catholic orders that provide religious schooling at primary, secondary, and university levels: (a) that founded in France by St Jean-Baptiste de La Salle in the late 17th cent.; (b) (more fully, Congregation of Christian Brothers) that founded in Ireland by Edmund Rice in 1802. Also: the members of either order considered collectively, or in association with a specific institution. Frequently used as a modifier. Occasionally in singular: a member of such an order.The official English name of the French order is the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools. Between 1882 and 1989, it also cultivated wine in the U.S. state of California (see quot. 1971).
