Etymology: Old English cilfer- , cilfor-lǫmb ewelamb, corresponding to Old High German chilburra , -ira (Middle High German chilbere , modern German Bavarian dialect kilbare , kilbere ; compare Swiss kilber masculine ‘young wether’, Bavarian kilbern to lamb); the stem kilƀ- is an ablaut form of kalƀ- in kalƀoz- calf n.1; there are many related words outside Germanic, with the phonetic base glbh-, designating the young of animals.
A ewe-lamb: commonly chilver-lamb n. Also chilver-hog. (Found in Old English, and still common in southern dialects, though not evidenced in the intervening period.)
