Etymology: < post-classical Latin affrication-, affricatio action or process of rubbing (4th cent.), substance spread by rubbing (5th cent.) < classical Latin af- , variant of ad- (see af- prefix) + fricātiō frication n., after affricāre affricate v. Compare affriction n.In sense 2 in phonetics after affricate n. and perhaps also German Affrikation (1860 or earlier in this sense); compare also affricated adj. 2, affricative n.
