Etymology: Probably < affreight- (in affreightment n. or affreighter n.). Compare French affréter (see affreightment n.), post-classical Latin affrettare to freight, load (from 13th cent. in British sources). Compare earlier freight v.
1. transitive. To let or hire out (a vessel) for the transportation of goods. Obsolete.
