Origin: A borrowing from Thai. Etymon: Thai chedi.
Etymology: < Thai chedi < Pali cetiya shrine < Sanskrit caitya relating to a funeral pyre (see chaitya n.).
In Thailand: a Buddhist monument or shrine, esp. a reliquary, often in the form of a bell-shaped base topped with a spire. Cf. prang n.1
