Origin: Either (i) a borrowing from French. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin. Etymons: French affluxion; Latin affluxion-, affluxio.
Etymology: < (i) Middle French affluxion (1564 or earlier), or its etymon (ii) post-classical Latin affluxion-, affluxio (1530 or earlier) < classical Latin afflux- , perfect stem of affluere afflue v. + -iō -ion suffix1, after classical Latin fluxiō fluxion n. Compare later adfluxion n.
Medicine. Now rare.
The flow or movement of blood or other fluid towards or into a part of the body; accumulation (of a fluid) in a part of the body, esp. vascular congestion; an instance of this. Cf. afflux n., affluxed adj.
