Etymology: < Old Norse *kjǫft- (in Icelandic kjǫptr , kjaptr , Swedish käft (pronounced chäft ) jaw, Danish kieft (chops), answering to a Gothic type *kiftus , Old Germanic *keftu-z , possibly from a stem *kef- *kaf- ‘to make a chewing movement with the under jaw’, whence also Old English ceafl , Middle English chavel jowl n.¹, and various cognate words in German and Dutch.

Obsolete exc. northern dialect.
