A piece of wood bearing and tilting the row of slates or tiles at the edge of a roof so as to throw rainwater clear of the wall. ΚΠ 1734 Builder's Dict. I Chantlate, in Building, a Piece of Wood fastened near the Ends of the Rafters, and projecting beyond the Wall to support two or three Rows of Tiles, so Placed, to hinder the Rain Water from trickling down the Sides of the Walls. 1867 W. A. Papworth in Gwilt's Encyl. Archit. (rev. ed.) ii. iii. 657 The mediæval method of easing the line of tiling at the foot of the framing deserves some notice;..it appears that the use of chantlates..frees the tie-beams, tassels, and other timber, except plates, from all contact with the masonry.
